Rheumatology specialists treat autoimmune disease and arthritis. These conditions include rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, gout, scleroderma, myositis, vasculitis and osteoarthritis. Our doctors also treat arthritis associated with infections, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease and psoriasis. Autoimmune hepatitis and uveitis are commonly co-managed by Rheumatologists. A thorough history and physical examination focused on the immune and musculoskeletal systems is used to arrive at a diagnosis. Specialized laboratory testing, in addition to x-rays, MRI scanning and CT scans, may be required to arrive at a patient’s diagnosis. Treatment of rheumatologic conditions often involves the use of immunosuppressive biological medications, chemotherapy drugs and corticosteroids. Careful monitoring of disease and potential complications of medication is an ongoing focus of treatment.
