The field of Dermatology specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes. There are over 3,000 different skin diseases. Some of the most frequently seen disorders are the various forms of skin cancer, psoriasis, acne, hair loss, rosacea and eczema. The diagnosis of skin disorders is often made by careful visual inspection and the recognition of patterns in the presentation of rashes. Additional testing may be required in the form of scraping of skin lesions, punch biopsy or excision of the abnormal skin. Blood testing is sometimes required.
